Yerevan turns back into a desert

By Laman Sadigova

A few decades ago a lot was done in order to make the semi-desert zone of Yerevan a green city, but today it is reverting back to its natural landscape.

The Armenian ecologist Silva Adamyan says that with the help of scientific research by botanists and zoologists in the Soviet Union, everything had been done to make the city greener. “Now we are just destroying the work of many years. What we are saying is that we should not cut down the green spaces because they are a protective layer, and we should find this information in the archives,” he says.

The ecologist also stressed that the cause for the recent evening winds are felled parks such as those in Dalma gardens, parks, and others.

"I remember when in 1960, before a memorial complex Tsitsernakaberd and several other parks were built, winds were strong every night, but then they were gone, they were kept back by the forests. However, now these forests have been cut down for business purposes," she also said.

The ecologists say that new forests need to be built; however, the process of transforming Yerevan into a desert has already begun.
