More than 2,000 civilians were killed as a result of 373 terrorism acts committed by Armenians in Azerbaijan, said Lieutenant-General Madat Guliyev, the head of Azerbaijan’s State Security Service .

Guliyev revealed the horrifying numbers of the victims of Armenian terror victims while addressing a conference entitled “The role of the youth in fight against terrorism, extremism and radicalism” in Baku on March 3.

“Even in the previous century, Armenian terrorists committed terrorist acts against Azerbaijan. Armenian terror regained a wide scope in 1980s,” he said reminding that twenty percent of the Azerbaijani territories were occupied by Armenia.

Armenian aggression against its neighboring country resulted in the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territories, death of over 20,000 Azerbaijanis while over 4,000 ethnic Azerbaijanis were taken captive, hostage, or went missing as a result of the war.

In the years of 1989-1994, Armenian terrorists have blasted passenger busses, passenger trains and blew up electric train at Baku subway to spread horror among the Azerbaijani population during the Karabakh war.

The investigation led by the Azerbaijani authorities completely proved that all the terror attacks mentioned above were orchestrated, sponsored and logistically supported by functionaries of the illegal regime of Nagorno-Karabakh, special services and other governmental bodies of Armenia.

Guliyev further said that Azerbaijan is making its contribution to the fight against terrorism.

“The fight against terrorism, extremism and radicalism, which seriously threaten the security in the world, is very important for Azerbaijan,” he noted.

The head of the State Security Service added that Azerbaijan joined the anti-terrorism coalition without any hesitation. “Azerbaijan actively participates in the international anti-terrorism coalition for ensuring peace and stability in the world. Azerbaijani servicemen participated in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan and Iraq,” he said.

He mentioned that some 900 Azerbaijani nationals joined terrorist organizations in Syria, Iraq and other countries, while most of them were killed.

“Some time ago, an insignificant tendency of joining terrorist organizations abroad was observed in Azerbaijan, but now this trend is even less. Over the past year, 54 people were deprived of the citizenship of Azerbaijan due to such actions.84, who returned to the country, were brought to criminal responsibility,” he added.

Guliyev further stressed that despite locating in a difficult geopolitical environment, Azerbaijan is the most stable country of not only the South Caucasus, but even of Europe.

“This became possible thanks to the policy, the foundation of which was laid by national leader Heydar Aliyev. Today, this political course is being successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev,” Guliyev said.

Guliyev emphasized that thanks to the policy of the President, Azerbaijan has taken a worthy place in the international security system by gaining the status of a reliable partner.
