Turkmenistan, UN discuss refugee issues

The Turkmen delegation participated in the 69th session of the Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry said in a message.

The event is annually held in Geneva to review and approve the agency’s programs and budget, advise on international protection issues. The current session brought together representatives from 132 countries.

The Turkmen delegation delivered a speech in which a special emphasis was placed on Turkmenistan's obligations under the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) to create orderly, safe, legal and responsible migration, which continues to be an imperative requirement of today, the message reads.

In November 2014, the UNHCR High Commissariat approved the global action plan for the reduction of statelessness for the period 2014-2024, which was enshrined in the resolution of the UN General Assembly.

In 2018, 735 people permanently residing in the territory of Turkmenistan, having no citizenship and representing different nationalities, became citizens of Turkmenistan. In the period 2011-2017, according to decrees of the Turkmen head of state, 8,145 people were granted the Turkmen citizenship.
