BTC oil flow to resume in days - Turkish minister
Transportation of oil through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) export
pipeline, suspended on August 6, will be resumed in the coming
days, Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said on Monday.
BP Azerbaijan, the operator of the major pipeline pumping oil to world markets, suspended the movement of oil through the conduit due to a fire caused by an explosion that hit its Turkish section. The explosion that took place in Turkey`s Erzinjan province had immediately ignited a fire. On August 11, firefighters managed to extinguish the fire.
Guler was quoted by the local Cihan news agency as saying there were no facts proving that the blast was a terror act. Repair work is now underway on the pipeline.
The $4 billion BTC pipeline opened in mid-2006. The 1,768 km pipeline pumps oil produced from Azerbaijan`s Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) fields in the Caspian Sea to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan. Britain`s BP Plc owns 30.1 percent of BTC, while Azeri state oil company SOCAR holds a 25 percent interest. Other shareholders include U.S. giants Chevron and ConocoPhillips, Norway`s StatoilHydro, Italy`s ENI and France`s Total.
