President: Turkmenistan increases gas exports

Turkmenistan is constantly expanding export volumes of natural gas, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov told participants of a two-day oil and gas road show organised by Turkmenistan. The road show starts on Wednesday in Dubai.

"Much work is being done to diversify natural gas supplies to international markets which is one of the priorities of the energy policy of our sovereign state," the Turkmen leader said.

According to him, innovations introduced to the oil and gas industry, existing and newly discovered sources of hydrocarbon resources and the high pace of work on the industrial development of the Galkynysh gas field contribute to the steady increase of the capacity of the country's fuel and energy complex.

"Hopefully, the first complex for gas purification from sulphur will be put into operation this summer," the Turkmen leader said.

Turkmenistan is one of the key players in the energy market in the Caspian region. Each year it exports raw materials to Russia and Iran. In 2009 the route to China was opened. Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world in terms of gas reserves.

Largest gas resources in the country are concentrated in the Mary region in eastern Turkmenistan, including Galkynysh which is recognised as the second largest deposit in the world.
