SOCAR to increase oil refining in 2013

Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR is planning to refine 6.6 million tons of oil in 2013, a SOCAR official told Trend news agency.

This year, he said, the figure will be 6.4 million tons -- almost unchanged from last year.

The plans to increase refining volumes are due to the need for increasing gasoline production.

Production of more gasoline is necessitated by consumption growth on this type of fuel in the domestic market, which has increased by 9 per cent.

Oil products are produced at two Baku refineries with total capacity of 20 million tons oil a year. Both refineries are owned by SOCAR, which refines around 6 million tons oil, extracted onshore and offshore.

Baku refinery named after Heydar Aliyev mostly processes light oil, while Azerneftyag refinery -- dark oil products.
