MP criticizes BP's social spending
Oil giant BP's allocations for social investment programs in
Azerbaijan are insufficient, a senior lawmaker has said.
"Although the company is making considerable profits from the projects it is successfully implementing in the country, it is not paying that much attention to the social sphere," chairman of the parliamentary commission on economic policy, Ziyad Samadzada, told a conference on corporate social responsibility in Baku on Tuesday.
Samadzada said management of oil revenues and safeguarding oil and gas pipelines could not be considered social investment. "I suggest that BP follow Azercell's (cellular operator) example in this respect."
BP Azerbaijan Vice-President for Communications and External Affairs, Seymour Khalilov, said he accepted Samadzada's criticism, expressing readiness to exchange views on the issue with the commission chairman.
