Iraq may join Turkish-Azeri gas pipeline project

Iraq may join the agreement signed by Azerbaijan and Turkey on plans to consider the construction of a new gas pipeline, an adviser to the Turkish Energy Ministry Salahaddin Cimen was quoted by Turkey’s Anadolu news agency as saying.

"Iraq's participation in this project as a gas producer is important for us," Cimen told an oil and gas event in Iraq.

He said the global demand for energy is growing, and Turkey's strategic position plays an important role in the economic and energy security of the region.

Baku and Ankara intend to build a new pipeline in Turkey to export most of the 50 billion cubic meters of gas that Azerbaijan intends to produce annually by 2025.

Project partners are working on all the issues regarding the planned gas pipeline and will begin construction operations in 2012, which are scheduled for completion by 2017, when the second stage of development will begin at Shahdaniz, Azerbaijan’s gas condensate field in the Caspian Sea.
