Iran says Europe should mend ties to buy gas

TEHRAN – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that if Europe is seeking to import Iranian gas, it has to remove several obstacles in its relations with Tehran.

"Europe is putting forward Iran’s nuclear program as a problem. This cannot be a hurdle for buying gas," Ahmadinejad told the press during a visit to Baku on Thursday. He added that "it is not that Iran needs European markets, but Europe needs Iranian gas".

"If Europe needs gas, we are ready to negotiate, but we are not insisting on that," Ahmadinejad said.

The U.S. and other Western nations accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, despite Tehran’s assurances that its nuclear program serves peaceful purposes. The UN Security Council has passed six resolutions on the issue, with four of them urging Iran to scrap its uranium enrichment work.
