EU urges ‘patience’, but keen on Southern Energy Corridor
BAKU – Head of the EU delegation to Azerbaijan has said developing a project on the Southern Energy Corridor that seeks to export gas from the Middle East and Caspian regions to Europe "requires some patience".
Roland Kobia told an international conference on the Caspian region’s gas infrastructure in Baku Wednesday that since the project is quite pretentious and covers a number of transit countries, a slew of issues are to be agreed.
"But I believe that this project will materialize, because it is both desirable and would bring considerable revenues to its participants."
Kobia said the Southern Energy Corridor is sought by all sides involved – importers, exporters and transit countries, given that Europe is currently the most stable gas market in the world.
"In the ancient times there used to be a saying that goes ‘all roads lead to Rome’. Now, we can say as well that all gas pipeline routes lead to Europe."
Kobia noted that Azerbaijan will be the main participant in the Southern Energy Corridor project. However, additional gas will be required to fill the planned pipeline, and all eyes are currently on meeting this requirement.
The energy corridor includes three projects – Nabucco, Turkey-Greece-Italy (TGI) and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).
