Azerbaijan says ready for Central Asian energy transit
Suitable conditions are available for exporting Central Asian hydrocarbons to Europe through Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani state energy firm SOCAR is ready to provide its infrastructure for the purpose, the company’s president, Rovnag Abdullayev, said Wednesday.
Hosting UK Energy Minister Lord Hunt, Abdullayev said a favorable environment is being ensured in the country for foreign investors. SOCAR has established business ties with British companies, just like with all other foreign partners, which is greatly contributing to the development of Azerbaijani-British energy cooperation, he said.
Hunt, for his part, enquired about the work being done in Azerbaijan to deliver the Caspian region’s hydrocarbons, and natural gas in particular, to energy-thirsty European markets.
In an interview with the Baku-based ANS TV channel, Hunt highlighted the resource-rich South Caucasus republic’s role in European countries’ energy supplies.
"During my talks in Baku I witnessed once again Azerbaijan’s being interested in supplying gas to Europe. I believe that it will fulfill the work assumed in this area," the minister said, adding that Britain was ready to import Azerbaijani gas and would do everything in its power to make this happen.
According to Hunt, London is also interested in providing security of Caspian gas fields as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure European energy security.*
