Azerbaijan to export 9bn cu m of gas in 2010
Azerbaijan will increase gas exports this year and sell a projected
total of 9 billion cubic meters of gas, the president of the
Azerbaijani state energy firm SOCAR has said.
Rovnag Abdullayev reminded that Turkey is to import 6.6bn cubic meters of gas during Phase 1 of developing Azerbaijan’s giant Shahdaniz field in the Caspian Sea. As for supplies to Georgia, the country’s South Caucasus neighbor, the volume will exceed 1bn cubic meters for the first time.
Also, Baku has concluded gas supply contracts with Russia and Iran. Azerbaijan is expected to deliver 1bn cubic meters to its giant northern neighbor and 500 million cubic meters to Iran in 2010.
According to the SOCAR president, the increase in gas exports to world markets is due to rising production from the fields developed by the company on its own.
"SOCAR will have additional 1-1.5bn cubic meters at its disposal in 2011 and plans to export it," Abdullayev added.
According to preliminary estimates, Azerbaijan’s gas exports amounted to 6.5bn cubic meters in 2009.*
