Pipeline pumping Azeri gas to Russia hit by blast
An explosion rocked the Mozdok-Gazimammad pipeline transporting
Azerbaijani gas to Russia in its section crossing the Derbent
region in the Russian republic of Daghestan Tuesday evening,
Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported.
The pipeline was partly destroyed after an explosive planted by
unknown individuals exploded, igniting a fire. Gas supplies were
suspended to 104 residential areas in Daghestan populated by about
215,000 people in the aftermath of the blast.
Rafiyaddin Guliyev, a representative of Azerbaijan’s state oil
company SOCAR, says the explosion has not caused any problems with
transporting the country’s gas to Russia. According to him, 1.5
million cubic meters of gas are being delivered daily to the
northern neighbor, as before.
"There are no problems on our end. The problem is only faced by the
Russian side, and it will be resolved soon," the SOCAR official
said.
In light of the explosion, Azerbaijan has assumed supplying some
parts of Daghestan with gas, including the Derbent region, SOCAR’s
President Rovnag Abdullayev said.
Repair is currently underway on the Mozdok-Gazimammad pipeline. The
operations are scheduled for completion on Thursday, an official of
Russia’s Ministry of Emergencies told reporters.*
