Greece seeks speedy launch of gas imports
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Spyros Kouvelis has said Athens hopes Azerbaijan will soon begin delivering large volumes of natural gas to its domestic market.
Kouvelis, who is visiting Baku, said in a meeting with Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev that his country was interested in importing Azerbaijani gas to be produced during the Phase 2 development of Shahdaniz, Azerbaijan`s largest gas field in the Caspian Sea.
The Shahdaniz field, operated by an international consortium, began production in 2006. It has the capacity to produce 318 billion cubic feet of gas during its initial phase, with another 706 billion cubic feet expected during Phase 2, which is to begin in 2013.
During the second stage of the project, Azerbaijan plans to export its gas to Europe.
Aliyev said Azerbaijan has a potential to export about 1 billion cubic meters of gas to Greece annually, but noted that this requires resolving transit-related issues first.
The minister added that Azerbaijan was also looking to cooperate with Greece in the field of alternative and renewable sources of energy.
