Turkey ready for transit of Arab gas to Europe

10 June 2009 13:48 (UTC+04:00)
Turkey is ready to act as a transit state for transporting Arab gas to Europe, its deputy minister of energy and natural resources has announced.
Speaking at a Caspian oil and gas conference attended by world energy giants in Baku last week, Yusif Yazar said all required agreements have been reached with Syria for this purpose. Construction of a 230 km pipeline to link the two countries` gas systems is underway. The project will contribute to bolstering security in the Middle East, according to Yazar.
The deputy minister emphasized that Iraq, Turkey`s close neighbor, possesses considerable gas reserves as well, saying Baghdad is also interested in delivering fuel to energy-thirsty European markets. The most appropriate route is the Iraq-Turkey pipeline and the two countries` have reached agreement and research is ongoing to pave the way for creation of the project.
