Iran keen on alternative to BTC
Iran, the world`s fourth-largest oil producer, has
offered transporting part of the oil produced in the Caspian
coastal nations to the Indian Ocean through the Neka-Jask pipeline,
an alternative to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline pumping
crude from the resource-rich Caspian basin to world markets.
An executive of the National Iranian Oil Company`s (NIOC) said that if Azerbaijan appeals to Iran in this respect, some of Azerbaijani crude could be delivered to the Persian Gulf. The Neka terminal has the capacity to store 1.5 million barrels of oil a day, he said.
The BTC pipeline transports oil produced from Azerbaijan`s Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) fields in the Caspian Sea to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan through Georgia.
The NIOC representative recalled that Azerbaijan was exporting some of its crude via Iran`s territory after tensions escalated in the neighboring South Caucasus republic in August 2008, referring to the Georgian-Ossetian military conflict that had sparked a brief war with Russia.
Iran`s planned pipeline, which is to link the Persian Gulf with the Caspian Sea, seeks to transport up to a million barrels of Caspian crude a day.
