Baku to dim lights for Earth Hour
By Laman Ismayilova
WWF's Earth Hour is coming up on March 19 and once again, Baku is the place to be for joining this global action.
Earth Hour is a global environmental movement mobilizing hundreds of millions of people all over the world to make a difference for the planet. Its key aim is to create environmental impact by utilizing the power of the crowd.
During Earth Hour actions, facade lights of famous buildings are turned-off in the big cities for an hour and the attendants promote energy saving through this symbolic action.
This year, “Earth Hour -2016” campaign in Azerbaijan will be hold by WWF-Azerbaijan and official partner Green Baku Youth Ecological Union.
What’s Baku without the iconic illuminated streets? On March 19 one can find the capital city switch off its lights for WWF's Earth Hour. The event to be held at 20:30 will run under the slogan “Let’s shine a light on Climate Action!".
The organizers invite all public and private organizations, as well as ordinary people interested in joining Earth Hour action to contact or register by following link: www.earthhour.az / https://www.facebook.com/earthhouraze/?fref=ts or call : +994 12 4922504/09
The seeds of Earth Hour were first planted in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as a symbolic event focused on switching off the lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change. Earth Hour has grown into the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment and its protection. Iconic buildings and landmarks around the world such as Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness for Earth Hour.
Earth Hour actions in Azerbaijan have been implemented since 2011 and held each year with participation of thousands of individuals.
In 2015, IDEA Public Union became an official coordinator of “Earth Hour” campaign in Azerbaijan and organized massive actions by support of WWF-Azerbaijan and Green Baku Youth Ecological Union.
