Azeri MP appointed PACE rapporteur

2 July 2008 20:31 (UTC+04:00)
An Azerbaijani lawmaker has been appointed a rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) during the group's summer session.
Gultakin Hajiyeva will report to the organization on issues concerning the demographic situation and immigration in Europe.
The decision was passed at a meeting of the assembly's committee on migration, refugees and population last week. The participants said in their remarks that a tendency of decreasing population was observed in Europe. Whereas Europeans accounted for 25 per cent of the world population in the early 20th century, the figure went down to just 11 per cent in the 21st century. Analysts predict that if the tendency persists, Europe's population will make up only 7 per cent by 2050.
The speakers emphasized that there was a need for a special rapporteur in the wake of this problem facing the European continent. The committee decided to hold preliminary hearings on the issue in Geneva in November and hear Hajiyeva's report.
