Greece supports OSCE efforts on Karabakh - former FM

Greece supports the OSCE Minsk Group's efforts on brokering settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, former Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis has said on a visit to the Azerbaijani capital Baku.

"I am very sorry to say that in the past we were close to resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but unfortunately now things are not moving," Bakoyannis, who is attending the second Baku International Humanitarian Forum, told journalists Friday.

According to Bakoyannis, a former OSCE Chair-in-Office, it is necessary to keep working with the Minsk Group and the international community to find a solution of the long-standing conflict.

The Minsk Group, co-chaired by France, the United States and Russia, has been mediating peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since then. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.

Bakoyannis said further that the relations between Greece and Azerbaijan are excellent.

"We have friendship and a productive relationship," she said.
