Obama affirms US commitment to Karabakh solution
WASHINGTON D.C. – President Barack Obama has affirmed the United States’ commitment to facilitating approval by Azerbaijan and Armenia of basic principles for settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, according to the White House.
The US president hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday. During the meeting, which focused on bilateral and international issues, Obama thanked the minister for his efforts in aiding a settlement to the long-standing dispute and underscored the US commitment "to achieve a framework agreement" between the conflict parties.
The U.S. co-chairs the OSCE Minsk Group brokering the peace process, along with France and Russia.
Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a brutal war which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
