Hurdles to US-Azeri ties ‘left behind’ – envoy
BAKU – US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza has said the two countries faced some challenges in bilateral relations in the past but they "have been left behind".
"We asked each other how strong U.S.-Azerbaijan relations are. But now, all the difficulties and misunderstandings are behind, particularly after our contacts and dialog in the past two weeks," Bryza told reporters during a visit to northwestern Azerbaijan on Monday.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Tina Kaidanow and co-chair of the US congressional taskforce for Azerbaijan Bill Shuster held talks in Baku last week.
Bryza said Azerbaijan is pivotal for the U.S. from three viewpoints – its location, energy cooperation and democratic development.
The ambassador has started a visit to the Azerbaijani regions on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the US Peace Corps. First, he headed to the Ismayilli region to familiarize himself with the work of the organization, which supports cultural exchanges, social assistance and language studies.
