US says ‘does not meddle in Azeri affairs’

BAKU – US Ambassador in Baku Matthew Bryza has said the United States "does not interfere with Azerbaijan’s internal affairs", following Azerbaijani politicians’ criticism of Washington.

Bryza said the U.S. is tied to Azerbaijan with a number of key commitments, and the South Caucasus republic is a friendly nation and a partner for the U.S.

"We want the citizens, government and civil society of Azerbaijan to direct their energy in concert to the strengthening of democratic institutions and economic reform in the country."

Regarding the closed-door meeting of Western countries’ diplomats with Azerbaijani opposition leaders last Friday, Bryza said he did not attend in person the meeting with Ali Karimli of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party and Isa Gambar of Musavat.

"I don’t think there is anything unusual or wrong with a meeting of any US embassy employee with opposition representatives. This is part of a democratic system and a step toward democratic progress," Bryza was quoted by the Baku-based ANS TV channel as saying.

Bryza added that the U.S. does not support revolution in any country of the world.
