Baku sky changed color ‘due to magnetic storm’

BAKU – The sky above Baku was seen in unusual yellow and reddish colors on Wednesday morning, which the environment minister has linked to a magnetic storm.

Minister Huseyn Baghirov told reporters that the development was due to magnetic waves causing an increased ionization of water in the upper layers of the atmosphere.

"This natural phenomenon is not harmful for the human body," Baghirov said.

The minister said further that mud rains have occurred in Baku in past days due to dust whirls coming from Central Asia and the Arabian Peninsula.

"Small particles rising to the upper layers [of the atmosphere] with dust whirls in Afghanistan, Pakistan and [Saudi] Arabia are spreading to different areas with air masses. A dust storm has lately occurred in Germany as well."

Baghirov said mud rains usually take place in Azerbaijan once in two to three years, adding that their increasing frequency indicates "a disruption of stability in global climate".
