Russian citizens may be deported from Azeri village

9 April 2011 14:49 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – Russian citizens living in a village of a northern Azerbaijani region will be deported unless they receive a formal permission to reside in the country, the immigration agency warned Friday.

Head of the State Migration Service Arzu Rahimov told a news conference that 280 villagers have received relevant warnings.

Residents of Khrakhoba, and Uryanoba, another village in the Khachmaz district, located 50 km away from the Russian border, used to hold Russian passports. In 1954, the land occupying 300 hectares was temporarily granted as pasture areas to Daghestan, Russia’s administrative area, on a decision of the Soviet Union. In 1984, the government of the Azerbaijan Republic, which was then part of the USSR, extended the respective agreement until 2004.
