Azerbaijan, Turkey sign deal to produce missiles
ABU DHABI – Azerbaijan and Turkey have signed an agreement on joint production of long-range missiles. The agreement was inked by Azerbaijan’s Defense Industry Minister Yaver Jamalov and Turkey’s Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul on Monday on the sidelines of IDEX, one of the largest defense exhibitions in the world being held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Under the deal, the Azerbaijani ministry and Turkish missile manufacturer Roketsan will jointly produce 107 and 122 mm missiles.
Roketsan’s 107 mm long-range missiles have a span of 11 km, 50 percent more than conventional 107 mm missiles.
122 mm missiles have a span that is double the range of conventional 122 mm missiles. The missiles, which have two warheads, can hit targets over a distance of 40 km.
On the sidelines of the IDEX exhibition, the Azerbaijani ministry and Turkish Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK) also signed an agreement on joint production of weaponry. Under the agreement, 40 mm revolver grenade launchers and their ammunition, and MP5 submachine guns will be manufactured at Azerbaijani plants.
Minister Yaver Jamalov said earlier that the revolver grenade launchers, used for close distance battles, will be manufactured on the basis of MKEK technologies.
MKEK, established in 1950, is a reorganization of government-controlled group of factories in Turkey that provides the Turkish military with supplies, munitions and equipment.
Also, Azerbaijan held discussions with Pakistan on joint production of air bombs, said Pakistan's Global Industrial & Defence Solutions company's marketing director, Muhammad Salman.
Salman said the company’s Rocket Propelled Bombs (RPB) are currently exported to a number of countries.
Azerbaijan is displaying defense industry goods of 71 types at the IDEX exhibition.
