Ship blast kills one, injures four
BAKU – An explosion rocked a ship docked on the coast of the Caspian Sea in Baku on Monday evening, killing one and injuring four others, the emergencies ministry said.
According to Azerbaijan’s State Naval Administration, the accident is believed to have occurred during welding work on the Shirvan freight vessel owned by the Caspian Shipping Company, which is under repair at a shipyard. The blast came after a fire broke out on board.
But the Ministry of Emergency Situations said in a statement that only a fire had occurred and numerous items burnt down in lounges located in the front of the vessel. The blaze was extinguished over four hours.
Kanan Mammadov, an official of the Ilham Allahverdiyev Shipyard, said the fire was presumably caused by a short circuit in electrical wires.
However, emergencies ministry specialists say that the fire could have been caused by violations of safety regulations during welding operations.
