Campaigns for Azeri parliament election kick off
BAKU – Pre-election campaigns of hopefuls running for parliament in Azerbaijan began on Friday.
Under the country’s laws, campaigning is to end at 8 a.m. on November 6, 24 hours ahead of polling.
695 candidates have been registered to stand in the elections to be held in 125 constituencies, the Central Election Commission said Thursday.
The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has the most approved hopefuls - all but two of the 114 candidates, while the election bloc of the opposition Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and Musavat party has seen slightly over a third of its candidates registered.
Parliamentary elections are held in Azerbaijan by the majority of votes in 125 constituencies. Previous elections were held in 2005.
