Briton arrested on pedophilia charges
A British citizen was detained on charges of pedophilia in Baku early last week.
The 49-year-old Patrick O'Brien, who had been wanted internationally, was arrested by local law enforcers, the Interior Ministry said.
The Sabayil district court on Thursday sentenced O'Brien to three months in detention after a closed-door trial.
Defense attorney Fikrat Mirzayev pointed out that his client had been charged with a crime committed at the age of 19. He reminded that the crime was uncovered in 2007 and a British court had issued a ruling to have O'Brien arrested.
According to court materials, O'Brien is charged with an attempt to rape his underage nephew and niece.
Law enforcement sources said O'Brien works for a major foreign oil firm which is not elaborated.
The defendant said in his testimony that he was unaware of his being wanted in Britain and that he was innocent.
The British embassy has appealed for O'Brien's extradition. The Azerbaijani Justice Ministry has started working to arrange the transfer, its official Zaver Garalov said.
He said O'Brien was arrested under a court ruling in accord with the 1957 European Convention on Extradition which was co-signed by Azerbaijan and Britain.
