Armenian spy seized on frontline: ministry (UPDATED)
BAKU – An Armenian intelligence officer was seized on Saturday after crossing the contact line of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.
According to Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry, an infiltration attempt by an Armenian intelligence group was prevented at around 5 p.m. in the northwestern part of the frontline. The intruders, who saw that their attempt had failed, began to escape, but one of them was detained.
During initial questioning, Manvel Saribekyan testified that the intelligence group’s attempt to infiltrate had been made on orders from the Armenian secret service.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. OSCE-brokered peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a shaky cease-fire in 1994. Armenian armed forces continue to occupy over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory.
