British lawmaker could be ‘blacklisted’ in Azerbaijan
BAKU – A British lawmaker could be blacklisted by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry over an illegal visit to the Armenia-occupied Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.
Elkhan Polukhov, the ministry spokesman, told Radio Liberty that the Azerbaijani embassy in Britain was scrutinizing reports on Steven Pound’s visit, which were circulated by the Armenian media. If the reports are confirmed, Pound will be announced "persona non grata" in Azerbaijan, Polukhov said.
The British MP reportedly met during his visit with Ashot Gulyan, head of the separatist regime’s National Assembly.
Nagorno Karabakh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by Armenia since a 1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Armenia continues to occupy Nagorno Karabakh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Years of peace talks have brought few tangible results.
