Monument to Azeri massacre victims to be erected in Turkey
A monument honoring the victims of the Khojaly massacre committed by Armenians against Azeris in 1992 will be erected in Ushak, west central Turkey.
Turkish media reported that deputy head of the town’s municipality, Omar Ogtay Akarca, said the goal is to support Azerbaijan and condemn Armenia.
"We cannot remain indifferent to what happened in Khojaly. I hope that the three political parties represented in the municipality’s assembly will support this proposal."
Akarca added that the memorial will be located in the Ataturk park in the center of Ushak.
The parties included in the municipality assembly have pledged unanimous support for the initiative.
On February 25-26, 1992, Armenian forces attacked unarmed civilians in Khojaly with the support of the Russian troops. 613 people were brutally killed, while 1,275 taken captives, 487 became handicapped and 150 remain missing.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.*
