Azerbaijan is seeking a decision from the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, said First Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov, who heads the Azerbaijani delegation at the assembly.
"Other international organizations have already issued their feedback on the long-standing conflict and passed respective decisions. Therefore, it is important that NATO state its stance as well," Asgarov told journalists.
According to him, the Azerbaijani delegation will again raise the issue at the next Parliamentary Assembly meeting due in Riga, Latvia in late May.
"There have been decisions in NATO committees to that end, but we want such a step to be taken on the assembly level," Asgarov said.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The OSCE Minsk Group, co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, is brokering peace talks.*
