Israel ‘not to recognize’ Armenian ‘genocide’
Knesset will not recognize the alleged Armenian "genocide", Joseph
Shagal, the president of Azerbaijan-Israel International
Association and a former Knesset lawmaker, said while commenting on
the media reports claiming the Israeli parliament would table the
issue soon.
The reports circulated that the MERES group intends to put on discussion the issue on the purported Ottoman-era mass killings in the Knesset.
"The chance is zero. MERES is a marginal political faction which does not represent anyone at all. It has no influence in the Knesset. By raising this issue, the group just wants to remind of its existence", Shagal said, adding that this topic "is of no interest and is nothing but a political speculation."
Armenians residing in the Anatolia region fought against the Ottoman army in support of Russia during World War I. In an effort to end the stand-off, the Ottoman government decided to resettle the Armenians to other parts of the country in 1915. Armenians claim their forefathers were subjected to "genocide" in the process, while Ankara dismisses the claims and has offered conducting joint historical research.*
