Tel-Aviv says Turkey tension not to affect Azeri ties
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has said there was no
contradiction among Azerbaijan-Turkey, Azerbaijan-Israel and
Israel-Turkey relations.
"Our ties with Turkey should be viewed in the context of overall cool-down in relations in the whole world," the minister told reporters in Baku on Thursday. "But we do hope that our relations with Turkey will return to the previous realm. We weren’t the initiators of the recent crisis and we are hopeful that it won’t last long."
Tension between Israel and Turkey mounted after a diplomatic row in January. Following Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s criticism of Israel’s handling of the situation in Gaza, Tel-Aviv responded by saying "Turkey is the last country that should preach morality to Israel". Adding fuel to the fire was a dispute over television series Valley of the Wolves, which is popular in Turkey. Turkish Ambassador to Israel Ahmet Oguz Celikkol was further summoned to the Israeli Foreign Ministry for a meeting during which Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon expressed Tel-Aviv’s concern over what his government described as anti-Israel propaganda. Ankara said the Turkish ambassador faced disrespect during the meeting. Celikkol was seated lower than Ayalon and the Israeli deputy minister refused to shake the ambassador’s hand.*
