Armenian diplomats accused of illegal car trade

30 January 2008 23:02 (UTC+04:00)
Employees of the Armenian embassy in Argentine are suspected of involvement in illegal exports of cars. Their names have been indicated in a statement issued by the Argentinean Foreign Ministry, German Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA) news agency reported.
The Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Vladimir Karapetian has refuted the report. In an interview with Radio Liberty, he claimed that none of the Armenian diplomats working in the South American country have acquired vehicles by illegal means or used them to make a profit.
"The embassy had only one car on its books -Honda Accord which was donated by Armenian benefactor Eduard Safarian. In 2007, another vehicle - Ford Focus - was presented to the embassy," Karapetian said.
The Argentinean government has launched a scrutiny into the matter on the initiative of Foreign Minister Jorge Tayan to ascertain whether or not the reports have merit.
