Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, has said there is every opportunity for the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict in the near future.
Medvedev told a joint news briefing with his Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Monday that prospects of relations between the two countries and settlement of the Upper Garabagh conflict were discussed during the meeting. The two presidents issued a joint statement following the meeting.
The Russian leader said his country, jointly with other states, would do its best to achieve a solution to the conflict.
"Further to the adoption of a variety of resolutions and documents by international organizations, the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents` getting closer to a settlement of the conflict is of great importance in this regard," Medvedev said.
The Russian president also said that the resolution of the Garabagh conflict, according to the basic principles, was very close. "The last meeting held in St. Petersburg showed that the parties are ready to remove all discrepancies and move forward."
President Aliyev said hopes for reaching a solution had arisen after the St. Petersburg meeting.
"All accepted international documents regarding the conflict envision its settlement as soon as possible. The principle of territorial integrity is unchangeable. As for the self-determination of nations, this must be considered within the previous principle."
The Azerbaijani president also said the peace process was entering a final stage, noting that the St. Petersburg talks had been constructive.
"World countries, as well as Azerbaijan and Armenia, have great expectations for the earliest settlement of the Garabagh conflict. We are moving forward. Today, the settlement of the conflict is nearer than in the previous years."
