Yerevan exerting
The presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia will keep
on discussing issues of the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict that
remain unresolved during their talks in St. Petersburg, Azerbaijani
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has said, adding that the
discussions will be a continuation of the Prague meeting.
Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sarkisian are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of a CIS economic forum in the Russian city early in June.
"Certainly, the presidents will discuss any topic that is touched upon, but now, I would very much like to hear tunes of constructivism on Armenia`s part. Despite the unfolding of a new situation in the region, Armenia has, unfortunately, begun to exert a negative pressure on the course of the peace process," Mammadyarov told a local news agency.
"We had accomplished everything in the peace process with the former Armenian administration [during President Robert Kocharian`s tenure], but, with the current administration, we have accomplished nothing. As a person conducting negotiations, I can`t boast that we have achieved even some advances on outstanding issues."
According to Mammadyarov, the parties "have not moved forward even an inch" since a new leader came to power in Armenia.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in the late 1980s due to Armenia`s territorial claims. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan`s internationally-recognized territory since the early 1990s in defiance of international law. The ceasefire accord was signed in May 1994, but over a decade of efforts by US, Russian and French mediators have been fruitless so far.
