Azerbaijani Charge d'Affaires to Peru Mehdi Mammadov has met with the country's newly elected President of the Congress Luz Salgado Rubianes to discuss prospects for cooperation between the two countries.

Mammadov congratulated Luz Salgado Rubianes on her election as the President of the Congress, and wished her success in the future endeavors, Azertac reported.

He further informed the president of the Peruvian Congress on the history of Azerbaijan, as well as the socio-economic reforms carried out in Azerbaijan and its international relations.

The officials also discussed prospects for Azerbaijan-Peru cooperation in political, educational, cultural and economic fields.

Rubianes lauded the activity of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Peru, saying her country plans to open its diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan too. She hailed the activities of friendship groups in both countries' parliaments.

Previously, Peru announced about opening of an embassy in Azerbaijan to develop and strengthen the bilateral relations.

Baku welcomed the decision of the Peruvian government.

The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Peru were established on June 25, 1996.

In 2013, the Peruvian Congress adopted a resolution condemning the Khojaly genocide and Armenia's aggression against Azerbaijan.
