Azerbaijan is going to establish a first rehabilitation center for hemophiliacs, said Gulnara Huseynova, the president of the Republican Association of Hemophiliacs.

The clinic will provide sick people with extended social, psychological and physiotherapy services, she told Trend on May 25.

So far, hemophiliacs could enjoy physiotherapy services in some hospitals only in the period when they were treated, she said.

“Thanks to the center the patients will have an opportunity to use physiotherapy for 21 days,” Huseynova noted.

The Association established the center with the financial support of the Council of State Support to NGOs under the President of Azerbaijan.

The center is going to operate after June 15. At first, the center expects to cater for ten people. However, by the end of the year the number of patients being treated there will increase up to 65-70.

The number of registered hemophiliacs in the country stands at 1,550 people. Some 55 percent of them are preschool, school-age children and young people.

Hemophilia is a type of inherited blood disorders in which the blood does not clot properly. The condition is passed to a child by one or both of his or her parents.

Bleeding disorders are due to defects in the blood vessels, the coagulation mechanism, or the blood platelets. An affected individual may bleed spontaneously or for longer than a healthy person after an injury or surgery.

The Cabinet presented a state treatment program for people with hemophilia in 2006.

As part of the State Program on hemophilia in 2011-2015 to improve health care in the country, the government created registries which reflect data on age, sex, type of disease, severity, type and number of received treatment.

Centers of hemophilia and thalassemia have been already established in the Shirvan and Ganja regions. There, patients are provided with all required medicines. They also enjoy a chance to have blood transfusions. Similar centers are expected to be established in the Guba, Lankaran and Mingachevir regions.
