YARAT to host Mapping the Intangible expo

By Laman Ismayilova

YARAT Contemporary Art Space will host an exhibition "Mapping the Intangible" on June 29.

The exhibition will bring together ARTIM Lab participants Sofiya Ahadova, Yunis Novruz, Gunay Aliyeva, Shalala Salamzadeh, Nigar Tahmazova, Sultan Babazade, Masuma Hajiyeva, Farid Rzayev, Aytac Hafizova, Tarane Quliyeva and Nazrin Musayeva.

ARTIM Project Space features the result of a workshop conducted by the curator Juan Sandoval, director of the Art Office of Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto in Italy. The workshop under the topic "Mapping of the Intangible" encouraged the artists to discuss maps as networks in a territory and of relationships that are active in the processes of social and urban transformation. It is also one of the instruments that Cittadellarte is developing as a component of demopraxy, together with the Forums and the "Rebirth/Third Paradise" Working Sites.

Geographical maps, urban maps, mental maps, diagrams, and relational schemes are instruments that are part of the grammar of the contemporary artist, both because they offer a reading of the territory and because they contain a historical, political or social meaning. The map places the viewer in a specific socio-temporal context and the artist takes advantage of this quality to use it as a “compass” that leads into the conceptual "territory" of their artistic creation.

"Mapping the Intangible" targets realizing maps that, besides representing a specific territory, are an instrument of representation of the relationships between community and territory, subject and social context, artist and spectator. During the workshop, the participants discussed the meanings of concepts commonly used in contemporary art, such as participation, public and context among others, finally developing their redefinition. Each artist, using the instruments of their artistic language, realized a map of the intangible that corresponds to their personal reading of a specific topic of the relationships in the social environment where they operate as artists.

The event starts at 19:00.
