State duty for expat work permit may rise
The state duty paid by employers for labor migrants
in Azerbaijan may be increased in an effort to draw to the country
a more experienced expatriate workforce and prevent the influx of
unqualified migrants into the country.
According to Minister of Labor and Social Security Fizuli Alakbarov, the government is not satisfied with the professional level of foreign workers. He said a proposal has, therefore, been made to raise the state duty for work permits. If the government approves it, companies hiring foreign nationals will be required to pay 1,000 manats ($1,250) per expatriate migrant, instead of the previous 45 manats ($56).
"We don`t want a cheap and unskilled workforce in Azerbaijan. If the proposal is accepted, no company would pay that amount for an unskilled employee," he concluded.
