Georgia moves to speed up railway build
The Georgian government has replaced the manager overseeing
construction of the country's section of the major
Baku-Tbilisi-Akhalkalaki-Gars railway which also goes through
Azerbaijan and Turkey.
Tbilisi explained the step by the delay observed in launching construction work. The new project director, Bidzina Bregadze, has pledged the operations will start soon.
"I was appointed to the post two days ago. The goal of the replacement is to eliminate problems that emerged with construction. I have become familiar with the work to be done. Suitable conditions will be provided in the soonest time possible to comprehensively implement the project, and construction work will be completed on time," Bregadze said.
The railway will create the shortest route to transport cargo between Europe and Asia. The three countries sealed a deal on building the rail line in February 2007.
