Azerbaijan enhances coop with FAO
Azerbaijan`s Agriculture Ministry has signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that commits the country to provide financial support for the solution of food safety issues.
FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva, who co-signed the document with Minister Ismat Abbasov, told a press conference that his organization plans to open a regional office in Azerbaijan and work has already been launched in this area.
FAO intends to cooperate with Azerbaijan in the field of fisheries, disease control, and improvement of agricultural legislation, da Silva said.
The 28th European Regional Conference of FAO and the 37th session of the European Commission on Agriculture were held last week in Baku. High-level delegates from over 50 countries took part in the discussions on food safety.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the opening ceremony.
Hosting FAO chief da Silva last Wednesday, President Aliyev welcomed successful cooperation between Azerbaijan and FAO, and described Baku`s hosting the regional conference of the organization as a good sign of this cooperation.
