South Korean government has allocated a $26.18 million grant to Azerbaijan’s state-run water supplier Azersu to improve water supply and sanitation system in a settlement of the capital Baku.

An agreement on the allocation, provided by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, was signed in Baku on Friday by Ambassador Lee Ji Ha and chairman of the Azersu open joint stock company Gorkhmaz Huseynov.

Under the project to be implemented in the Kurdakhany settlement of Baku in 2011-2014, two water storages, a pump station, and 24.8 km long water and sewer pipelines will be built.

The rest of the expenses under the project will be covered by Azerbaijan.

Ambassador Lee Ji Ha said the overhaul of the water supply and sanitation system in Kurdakhany will allow to improve the standard of living of the local residents and facilitate environmental protection in the Absheron Peninsula, which encompasses Baku’s surrounding regions.

The project will also support the Azerbaijani government’s efforts to develop alternative water resources and adapt to climate change.

Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), a Korean government agency, will provide detailed design, construction and construction supervision of water supply and sanitation system in Kurdakhany, as well as equipment and materials necessary for the implementation of the project.
