Azerfon creates brand with Vodafone, announces 3G services
Azerbaijan’s fast-growing cellular operator Azerfon has created a
new brand jointly with Vodafone, the world's biggest mobile phone
group by sales, announcing the introduction of the 3G network, the
company’s executives told a presentation ceremony on Wednesday.
Guido Helbich, Azerfon Chief Executive, said the brand combines his company’s operation in the domestic telecom market with Vodafone’s experience.
"Presenting this brand marks the outset of a new stage in the development of Azerbaijan’s mobile communication market. Partnership with Vodafone will allow Azerfon to offer a number of innovative products and services to Azerbaijani users."
The services provided under the Azerfon-Vodafone brand require a new prefix for cellular numbers – 077.
Unlike the mainstream 3G data transfer capabilities, which provide for data transfer speed of 384 kb/sec, the new network will allow transferring information at the rate of 3.6 mb/sec. Initially, the cutting-edge service will be available in the country’s largest cities – Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, Ganja and Sumgayit, as well as in a number of smaller towns. Azerfon-Vodafone customers will be able to use 3G services in 72 countries.
Azerfon, which launched its operations in Azerbaijan in 2007, covers 80 percent of Azerbaijani territory and
provides services to 1.5 million people in the country of over 8 million. Since 2009, Azerfon is Vodafone PLC’s non-equity partner. The company was licensed by the government to render 3G services on December 1. Besides high-speed data transfer, the 3G standard, developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), enables the use of video-phones and mobile TV services.*
