3G telecom technology to be introduced in Azerbaijan
Preparations are underway to apply the advanced 3G telecommunication technology in Azerbaijan.
Industry experts say it is time to introduce the third-generation mobile networking technology, which is already used in a number of other countries, in Azerbaijan, the South Caucasus republic with a fast-growing ICT sector. The main issue that remains to be resolved is obtaining the necessary licenses.
Lars Nyberg, Chief Executive of TeliaSonera, the Nordic region`s largest telecom operator, told a news conference following his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev in Baku early last week that the two had comprehensively discussed introducing 3G technology in Azerbaijan.
3G refers to telecommunication hardware standards and general technology for mobile networking, superseding 2.5G. Developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), 3G networks enable users to benefit from a wider range of more advanced cellular services, including wide-area wireless voice telephone, video calls and broadband wireless data.
The introduction of the 3G technology would expand high-speed Internet access from mobile phones. It also offers distance learning, mobile libraries and online access to scientific laboratories.
Currently, the GSM-standard cellular phones used in Azerbaijan are based on the 2G technology.
