The Armenian armed units violated ceasefire with Azerbaijan a total of 9 times throughout the day, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported on August 31.

Armenian armed units, stationed in the Vazashen village of Armenia's Ijevan region and in the nameless hills of the Krasnoselsk region, opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces located in the Bala Jafarli village of Azerbaijan's Gazakh region, as well as on nameless hills of the Gadabay region.

Along the contact line, Azerbaijani positions also came under fire from Armenian positions situated near the Horadiz and Gorgan villages of the Fuzuli region, as well as on nameless hills of the Goranboy region.

For over two decades, Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict which emerged over Armenia's territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions.

Two decades of talks mediated by the OSCE MG group have failed to produce a breakthrough, and the renewed hostilities, the worst since the ceasefire deal signed in 1994, were assessed as the result of inactivity of the international community.
