Iran leader’s aid criticizes US over nuclear deal

A senior Iranian official has accused the USA of failing to meet its commitments regarding a landmark nuclear deal (aka the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action/ JCPOA) sealed between Tehran and the world powers last July.

“The Americans have not fulfilled their commitments regarding the JCPOA. The sanctions have not been fully lifted and unfortunately some conditions set out by Supreme Leader [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] have not been considered in the JCPOA,” IRNA news agency quoted Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to the Iranian supreme leader, as saying July 17.

Saying that Iran has realized all its commitments regarding the nuclear deal, he added that the Western side has not done so.

Velayati noted that the US President Barack Obama must issue a written directive on the removal of sanctions but he has failed to do so.

The supreme leader’s advisor made the remarks just one year after the JCPOA commonly known as the nuclear deal was reached between Tehran and the world’s major powers July 14, 2015.

As a result of the implementation of the JCPOA, some parts of international sanctions on the Islamic Republic were lifted.

Many in Iran and around the world expected that the implementation of the JCPOA would give a huge boost to the country’s economy after almost a decade of isolation from the global economy.

However, the country’s banking system still faces considerable difficulties in re-establishing ties with major international banks.
