Garibashvili says latest PACE resolution on Georgia mostly positive
By Mushvig Mehdiyev
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said the latest resolution of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on Georgia was positive in the main.
The PACE resolution titled "Functioning of democratic institutions in Georgia" is complicated with the negative milestones on the background of dominating positive points.
The amendments to the initial document note Georgia's significant progress in the field of democratic development. It also mentions the detention of almost all leadership of the former ruling United Nation Movement party and criminal cases against its high-ranking members.
"The PACE resolution expressed the opinions of major parties. The United National Movement is a member of the European People's Party and they showed solidarity on the issue regarding the UNM. There is no reason for agiotage. The text of the resolution is mainly about positive factors," Garibashvili said on October 2.
He noted that all court proceedings in Georgia are carried out in transparent and open fashion.
The PACE document said the members of the former ruling party undergo attacks and violence in Georgia. The PACE recommends the Georgian authorities to prevent its supporter from exerting pressure on the opposition forces.
The United Nations Movement initiated an amendment, which claims that Georgia's ex-premier Bidzina Ivanishvili interrupts the activity of the authorities. It also noted that the ministers and incumbent PM Irakli Garibashvili has publicly confirmed that they are regularly consulting with Ivanishvili. The UNM's amendment condemning Georgia's current authorities has failed to be approved.
The Parliament of Georgia applied for the Special Guest status at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on March 4, 1993, and received a positive reply on May 28, 1996.
Georgia has signed and ratified 69 conventions of the Council of Europe, while left 15 conventions unratified so far.
