Turkmenistan, UN discuss situation in Afghanistan

Issues of global energy security and the situation in Afghanistan were discussed at a meeting of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Special Representative of UN Secretary General for Afghanistan, head of the UN mission in Afghanistan Jan Kubis.

The sides exchanged views on cooperation prospects.

Kubis expressed appreciation for the support rendered to neighboring Afghanistan.

He noted the importance of humanitarian aid delivered to Afghanistan, electricity supplies, as well as large infrastructure projects, including the transport sector, which will contribute to the establishment and development of the Afghan economy.

Speaking about the construction of the Turkmenistan- Afghanistan-Pakistan- India (TAPI) gas pipeline, Kubis stressed its relevance in terms of not only economic benefit, but also the consolidation of political stability and security at a regional and global scale.

The TAPI pipeline project with design capacity of 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year will extend from Galkhynysh field in Turkmenistan through the Afghan cities of Herat and Kandahar to the final point, a settlement on the Pakistani-Indian border.

According to experts, TAPI is not only a regional project envisaging the transportation of Turkmen gas, but also a global project. They believe that the implementation of the project will strengthen the independence of Turkmenistan and its gas supplies to world markets will increase significantly.
